The Northfield Rambler

This is why we live here.

Posted by Kevin.....

Northfield is a wonderful place to live.

During the week, Henry, Walter and I walk along Division St. in downtown, making our way down to the "Riverwalk" with it's wrought iron railings and rough stone walls following the high banks of the Cannon River. We cross the gently arching pedestrian bridge and finish our loop at
Bridge Square where we buy popcorn and lemonade from a little red stage coach parked near the fountain.

Norman Rockwell sits nearby, sketching us.

When Stace has a lunch break, we will meet her at "Tiny's Dogs All Day" were she grabs a Chicago hotdog and joins us on the bench just outside Tiny's.

But Tiny's has just gone out of business after 60 years. And that's too bad.

On Saturday mornings I join my friends at the Northfield Bike Club as we spin along the many miles of scenic country roads through beautiful farmland and rolling hill surrounding Northfield. Our rides last 4 to 6 hours.

We end our rides at The Goodbye Blue Monday coffee shop in Northfield, and sit right outside in
old movie theater seats sipping our espressos.

So now you get it. This is a great life we have, huh?

A couple of Saturdays ago, shortly after all of us bikers sat down, a young man and a young woman approach the bench in front of Tiny's, pulled out a guitar and a violin and began playing Ashokan Farewell, which is truely amazing.

Silence fell over the whole block.

You are somewhat of a romantic dear.
And a bit of a revisionist, as well. But sweet blog, honey.

Northfield IS a romantic, refreshingly Rockwellian place....BUT a violin in front of Blue Monday? In Minnesota? No, I cannot accept that memory. Now, a Welkian accordian with dancing bubbles I could believe. After all, we're talking Minnesota here, not the NYC subway.

A lovely blog post about our lovely town (well, I live near Webster but do consider Northfield "my" town since I'm there all the time anyway). I've never seen anyone play a violin or accordion in town (except during special events like the Vintage Band Festival) but have seen a man playing his trumpet on Bridge Sqaure a few times - playing like he was having the time of his life. Loved it!
